University of Amsterdam: modernising and maintaining Datanose

Continuity for a platform that education depends on

Datanose supports students, lecturers and education support staff at the University of Amsterdam with timetables, study programmes, room bookings and administrative processes.

The university wanted to safeguard continuity and keep developing the existing application. GlobalOrange analysed the software, renewed parts of it and took on maintenance and further development within the collaboration.

The original case describes more than 5,000 daily users. The software needed to remain available to them while its underlying foundation was improved.

Challenge

Safeguard an intensively used platform and remove technical barriers to change.

Approach

Architecture and code analysis, refactoring and continued development with a shared roadmap.

Result

A more maintainable foundation. According to the client, more was delivered than planned, on time and within budget.

First, understand where the product is constrained

We reviewed the existing architecture, code and functionality. The result was an overview of bottlenecks, risks and improvements relating to stability, maintainability and performance.

This guided the modernisation. Much of the functionality was already available and valuable to users; the challenge was to make that foundation easier to maintain and extend.

“In GlobalOrange, we have found a reliable technology partner. Their approach and the pleasant collaboration led to a great result: more was delivered than planned, within budget and on time.”

Modernising while continuing to develop

Targeted refactoring cleaned up the code so changes could be made more reliably without causing problems elsewhere. Specialist refactoring and security expertise was introduced when needed.

New features and improvements followed a roadmap. The team was temporarily expanded for larger additions.

Within the collaboration, GlobalOrange acted as the contact for application management and coordination with the hosting provider. The university no longer had to establish which supplier should handle an issue itself.

A practical foundation for further development

Targeted modernisation

Refactoring made existing code more maintainable and reduced technical obstacles to change.

Capacity when needed

The application management and development team was temporarily expanded for larger new features.

Priorities on the roadmap

Using Agile and Scrum, the team worked incrementally on the features and improvements that mattered to the university.
