Rijkswaterstaat: coordinating roadworks with workflow software

Coordinating roadworks without thousands of separate messages

When work is carried out on national roads, several organisations need to know when it can take place and what traffic measures are required. Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch public works agency, wanted a clearer way to organise requests, planning and available working hours.

GlobalOrange developed the Verkeersstop.nl workflow application in three months. A second application, Werkbare-uren.nl, showed which lanes could be closed at specific times.

The original case reports savings of around 6,000 administrative hours a year and the replacement of approximately 30,000 faxes, emails and Excel files.

Challenge

Many stakeholders and fragmented information about roadworks and traffic measures.

Approach

Product strategy, design and development of two complementary workflow applications.

Result

A more consistent process and less administrative coordination, with the time savings reported in this case.

One workflow for everyone involved

Verkeersstop.nl supported the planning of works requiring traffic to be stopped temporarily. The application helped determine when work could take place and who would carry it out.

Traffic coordination offices, police, contractors and inspectors needed a shared view. The system brought request processing and information about available working hours together in an accessible workflow.

The aim was to coordinate works more effectively and account for traffic disruption during planning.

“Verkeersstop.nl has now been implemented to the full satisfaction of its hundreds of users. GlobalOrange is able to start and deliver a project at short notice. They have short lines of communication. Their pragmatic and methodical approach enables them to achieve good results quickly.”

Consistent information about lane closures

Werkbare-uren.nl enabled contractors and traffic inspectors to see which lanes, and how many, could be closed at specific times. One consistent approach replaced several different formats.

According to the original case, this replaced around 30,000 faxes, emails and Excel files annually and saved approximately 6,000 hours of administration. The project shows how digitising a shared process can reduce repeated coordination.
