SimpledCard: from MVP to a scalable FinTech platform

From idea to market launch

GlobalOrange developed a FinTech platform for SimpledCard that brings together business payments, receipts and expense management. The founders wanted to focus on product-market fit and sales, while an experienced technology partner built the product. Specialists in software development, UX, security and compliance worked together on an MVP that quickly reached the market. User feedback and SimpledCard’s business objectives guided further development. Payment cards, the mobile app, the Card Management System and financial integrations form one connected solution. A secure, extensible technical foundation supported further growth and the international rollout, including Germany. SimpledCard retained control over product decisions and priorities.

The case at a glance

Challenge

Making a complex financial product simple for employees and administrators, while meeting demanding security and compliance requirements. The founders wanted to keep their focus on the market and their first customers.

Approach

A multidisciplinary team developed an MVP and expanded the platform based on user feedback. Architecture, security and usability received attention from the outset.

Result

A scalable product for business payments and expense management, with a mobile app, card management and financial integrations. The rollout continued in Germany.

From payment to a documented expense

SimpledCard connects payments with the supporting information for each expense. Organisations assign payment cards to employees and manage spending limits in the Card Management System. After making a payment, an employee uses the mobile app to attach a photo of the receipt to the transaction. Administrators can see payments in real time.

That connection was a key principle in the development. The product needed to support complex financial processes while remaining clear to the people who use it every day. The app and management platform were developed around card payments and their supporting documentation.

The connection to the accounts also received attention. Integrations with financial software help process transactions and their supporting documentation. The right integration depends on the organisation’s accounting package and processes. This connects payment, checking and bookkeeping, with the transaction data and supporting documents the finance team needs.

A secure foundation for growth

A financial platform requires careful choices in architecture, security and compliance. For SimpledCard, these considerations were part of the design from the start. The development team followed the principle of security and compliance by design: security requirements and financial processes formed part of product development.

Alongside the development team, GlobalOrange’s Architecture Team helped evaluate architectural choices. Technical decisions were reviewed from several specialist perspectives. The foundation needed to support the initial product and provide room for more users, further expansion and new product requirements.

Security as part of the product

Security was also assessed through penetration testing, with attention to known risks on the OWASP list. This made security part of both the design and the application review.

This approach gave SimpledCard an extensible platform to build on. When developing SaaS platforms, we connect the initial market launch with the technical choices that support future development.

Building the product roadmap together

The MVP was the starting point for further product development. After the initial market launch, user feedback and SimpledCard’s business objectives informed how the product developed. The founders could focus on product-market fit and sales, with GlobalOrange as their software development partner.

SimpledCard acted as product owner and set the product priorities. Daily contact with the development team helped turn requirements and ideas into improvements through prompt discussion. Using agile development and the Lean Startup methodology kept the focus on the product’s value for users and the organisation.

That collaboration connected commercial ambitions with technical development. The international rollout, including Germany, followed the initial market launch. Taking an existing solution forward calls for the same alignment between product decisions and technical possibilities. See our approach to improving a SaaS platform.
